On Algorithms for Simple Stochastic Games

چکیده

We survey a number of algorithms for the simple stochastic game problem, which is to determine the winning probability of a type of stochastic process, where the transitions are partially controlled by two players. We show that four natural approaches to solving the problem are incorrect, and present two new algorithms for the problem. The rst reduces the problem to that of nding a locally optimal solution to a (non-convex) quadratic program with linear constraints. The second extends a technique of Shapley called the successive approximation technique, by using linear programming to maximize the improvement at each approximation step. Finally, we analyze a randomized variant of the Hooman-Karp strategy improvement algorithm.

New Algorithms for Solving Simple Stochastic Games

We present new algorithms for determining optimal strategies for two-player games with probabilistic moves and reachability winning conditions. Such games, known as simple stochastic games, were extensively studied by A.Condon [2,3]. Many interesting problems, including parity games and hence also mu-calculus model checking, can be reduced to simple stochastic games. It is an open problem, whet...

Simple Stochastic Parity Games

Many verification, planning, and control problems can be modeled as games played on state-transition graphs by one or two players whose conflicting goals are to form a path in the graph. The focus here is on simple stochastic parity games, that is, two-player games with turn-based probabilistic transitions and ω-regular objectives formalized as parity (Rabin chain) winning conditions. An effici...

Solving Simple Stochastic Games with Few Random Vertices

Simple stochastic games are two-player zero-sum stochastic games with turnbased moves, perfect information, and reachability winning conditions. We present two new algorithms computing the values of simple stochastic games. Both of them rely on the existence of optimal permutation strategies, a class of positional strategies derived from permutations of the random vertices. The “permutation-enu...

Simple Stochastic Games and P-Matrix Generalized Linear Complementarity Problems

We show that the problem of finding optimal strategies for both players in a simple stochastic game reduces to the generalized linear complementarity problem (GLCP) with a P-matrix, a well-studied problem whose hardness would imply NP = co-NP. This makes the rich GLCP theory and numerous existing algorithms available for simple stochastic games. As a special case, we get a reduction from binary...

Finding Optimal Strategies of Almost Acyclic Simple Stochatic Games

The optimal value computation for turned-based stochastic games with reachability objectives, also known as simple stochastic games, is one of the few problems in NP∩coNP which are not known to be in P. However, there are some cases where these games can be easily solved, as for instance when the underlying graph is acyclic. In this work, we try to extend this tractability to several classes of...

Linear Complementarity and P-Matrices for Stochastic Games

We define the first nontrivial polynomially recognizable subclass of P-matrixGeneralized Linear Complementarity Problems (GLCPs) with a subexponential pivot rule. No such classes/rules were previously known. We show that a subclass of Shapley turn-based stochastic games, subsuming Condon’s simple stochastic games, is reducible to the new class of GLCPs. Based on this we suggest the new strongly...
